This is my fan translation of Kairi Seidouitusei Shougai no Chiguhagu na Hibi by Tokin! I love this manga so much. It’s a wonderful autobiography about DID and a representation with a tone we don’t usually get in English. Tokin-sensei gave me permission to translate the prologue and share it with an English audience because I know so many people would want to read it! I am not going to translate the entire text, but I do really really want to encourage people to submit it in this month’s Seven Seas interest survey!! Please help support Tokin-sensei’s wonderful work!

The amount of people who talk about Japan like it's heaven on earth (or, conversely, the worst place known to man), it feels like they need to see Japan a certain way, so they turn it into whatever they need it to be when it’s just A COUNTRY.

No, no one is getting deported for taking pictures. Yes, you are likely to be deported for smoking weed. The toilets are very fancy! Some of the infrastructure is very much not. Yes, some of the societal norms are stricter in some senses than, say, the US. But there are also a number of people who ignore them and don’t follow the “rules”. One person’s experience in Japan is likely to be completely different from another, depending on where they are, who they are, where they’re from, what they look like, etc.

So if you see a one off tweet about the “wisdom of the Japan” or like “THERE ARE NO PERSONAL FREEDOMS” just remember that it’s just a country, this is likely over exaggerated, and it’s a place that people live in, just like where you live ^_^

This is the Buddy for January 8th. I like the red spotlight over a black background look. I'm not sure why, it just looks fun and dynamic. I know nowadays the rule is to have as many colors as possible to rub it on the faces of people who had to spend money to print their comics, but I often find the most simple combinations are the most memorable.

Of course, it depends on the comic's genre. There seems to be a rule of thumb that comedies are allowed to have more simplistic art than action-adventure stories. Then you go all full circle to autobiographical independent comics and the art is once again on the more simplistic side.

Of course it seems like manga doesn't necessarily care about that rule. You can see goofy comedies with production values as good as the flashiest action manga. More power to them.

a comic about childhood (to young adulthood) fear of death! i tried to make it look similar to anime i fixated on as a kid, especially sailor moon and cardcaptor sakura.
